Environmental Action Plan

In December, 1995, Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. settled its Environmental Action Agenda. In the following spring of 1996, members of the association reviewed their plans for addressing environmental protection, which were then integrated into the Environmental Action Plan of JAMA. Following are the highlights of the plan.

Emphasis on on Comprehensive Measures Towards Environmental Conservation

  • Conduct research on the measures for vehicle life cycle assessment and cooperate in the standardisation activities of ISO14000
  • Establish a system enabling the acquisition of ISO14000 certification upon environmental management audit
  • For overseas operations, adopt the best possible environmental protection technologies available in the country or region

Prevention of Global Warming

  • Ensure that the fuel consumption goal is met by the year 2000 for petrol passenger cars and by the year 2003 for petrol trucks
  • Study possibilities for introducing low-emission vehicles
  • Cooperate in collaborative actions
  • Participate in R&D for high-level traffic control systems such as ITS
  • Stabilise production plant's CO2 emissions at the 1990 level by the year 2000
  • Facilitate and encourage car dealers to supply recycling equipment for new car air conditioner refrigerants (HFC134a)

Promotion of Recycling and Waste Reduction

  • Reduce shredder residue produced from used vehicles, and conduct evaluation research on technologies for using waste
  • Develop products aimed at meeting the goal of producing more than 90% recyclable new vehicles beginning in 2002
  • Reduce the use of substances hazardous to the environment
  • Reduce the amount of final waste from production plants to 40% of the 1990 level by 2000

Improvement of the regional environment

  • Develop technology for providing the world's most environmentally clean vehicle
  • Develop technology for providing the world's quietest vehicle
  • Draw up a self-management plan for chemicals
